Dehydrated Skin

What Is Dehydrated Skin?

Dehydrated skin lacks water, not necessarily oil — which is why it can affect any skin type, including oily or acne-prone skin. It often shows up as a dull, tight or uncomfortable feeling, fine dehydration lines, and skin that looks less plump and radiant than usual.

Dehydration is different from dry skin (which lacks oil rather than water), though the two can occur together. If sensitivity and reactivity are your main concern rather than a lack of hydration, our Sensitive Skin page has more relevant information.

What Causes It?

  • Insufficient water intake or fluid loss through the skin’s surface
  • Environmental factors — sun exposure, wind, heating and air conditioning can all draw moisture from the skin
  • Over-cleansing or using products that strip the skin’s natural moisture barrier
  • Skipping SPF and hydrating skincare, which allows moisture loss to compound over time
  • Ageing — skin’s ability to retain water naturally declines over time

Frequently Asked Questions

Is dehydrated skin the same as dry skin?

No — dehydrated skin lacks water, while dry skin lacks oil. Dehydration can affect any skin type, including oily skin, which is why it’s easy to misdiagnose at home.

How quickly will my skin feel better?

Many people notice an improvement in comfort and glow fairly quickly with the right routine, though restoring the skin barrier fully takes consistency over several weeks.

Can I be both oily and dehydrated?

Yes — this is actually quite common. Oily, dehydrated skin still needs proper hydration; it just needs to be balanced with lightweight, non-comedogenic products.

Is there any downtime after treatment?

Our recommended treatments for dehydration involve little to no downtime.

Can I have treatment in summer?

Yes — summer treatments can still go ahead, as long as your skin is well prepped beforehand and you continue to follow your post-treatment care instructions.
