Cosmetic Tattoo Removal – How Laser Removal Works

Laser energy passes safely through the skin and targets the cosmetic pigment within the treated area. The pigment absorbs the energy and breaks into tiny particles, which are gradually cleared away by your body’s natural immune system.

Unlike traditional body tattoos, cosmetic pigments (such as those used in eyebrow tattooing) often contain iron oxides and other compounds that can react differently to laser treatment. Colour changes during the removal process are normal and expected.

Treatments are typically quick, usually taking only a few minutes depending on the size and density of the tattoo.

How Many Treatments Will I Need?

Most cosmetic eyebrow tattoos require 2–8 treatments, depending on:

  • Pigment colour and composition
  • Depth and density of the tattoo
  • Age of the tattoo
  • Skin type
  • Individual healing and immune response

Many clients notice visible fading after 1–3 sessions, with the most significant improvement often occurring early in the treatment course. As deeper pigment remains, progress naturally becomes slower and more gradual.

Treatments are generally performed every 6 weeks, although shorter intervals of 2–4 weeks may be appropriate if healing is excellent and approved by your clinician.

Most clients achieve complete or near-complete removal; however, results vary between individuals.

Pigment Colour Changes

Some eyebrow pigments, particularly those containing iron oxide, may temporarily change to orange, red, or rusty tones after laser treatment. This is a normal chemical reaction and does not indicate treatment failure.

Black and grey pigments usually respond the fastest, while warm browns, reds, and oranges may require additional treatments. Uneven fading throughout the brows is also common during the removal process.

Temporary Hair Loss

Because eyebrow hairs grow at a very shallow angle through the skin and naturally contain pigment, they can absorb laser energy during treatment. As a result, temporary brow hair thinning or shedding is an expected and often unavoidable side effect of cosmetic eyebrow tattoo removal, particularly for those with darker brow hair. The hair may be singed or the follicle temporarily shocked — this does not indicate damage or unsuccessful treatment.

Some practitioners choose to shave the brows prior to treatment to reduce this effect; however, we prefer to avoid this wherever possible so that as much of your natural brow remains intact throughout your treatment journey.

The good news is that any hair loss is almost always temporary. Complete regrowth is expected within weeks to months, though the timeframe varies between individuals.

Before Your Appointment

Please:

  • Apply SPF 50+ whenever the area is exposed to sunlight, continued throughout the treatment process
  • Avoid spray tanning for at least 2 weeks beforehand
  • Arrive with clean brows free from makeup or skincare products
  • Avoid any form of brow tinting for 1–2 weeks prior
  • Consider applying an over-the-counter topical numbing cream 30–60 minutes before treatment if desired
  • Avoid aspirin, ibuprofen, or other blood-thinning medications unless prescribed by your doctor

Immediately After Treatment

You may experience:

  • Temporary whitening (“frosting”)
  • Mild redness and swelling
  • Petechiae (small pinpoint spots of bleeding)
  • Mild bruising
  • Temporary colour changes in the pigment

These responses are expected and usually settle over the following days.

Aftercare

For optimal healing:

  • Apply ice intermittently for the first 1–2 hours if needed
  • Use Bepanthen® ointment several times daily for the first few days
  • Keep the area clean and avoid rubbing or scratching
  • Do not pick blisters or scabs
  • Avoid swimming pools, spas, saunas, and excessive heat for 7 days
  • Avoid strenuous exercise for 48 hours
  • Do not apply makeup or active skincare products until the skin has healed
  • Avoid spray tanning until fully healed
  • Once healed, protect the area daily with SPF 50+

If Temporary Brow Hair Loss Occurs

To support healing and regrowth:

  • Avoid waxing, threading, or tweezing the brows while healing
  • Handle the area gently — avoid rubbing or scratching
  • A brow serum may be introduced to support hair health if recommended by your clinician
  • Brow pencils or powders can be used to camouflage thinning once skin has completely healed

Henna, Tinting & Lamination

Important: These should be avoided throughout your entire treatment course and for at least 14 days before and after each session.

Before treatment, henna and chemical tints deposit pigment into the hair shaft and surrounding skin. Because the Q-switched laser selectively targets pigment, it may inadvertently target this residual pigment during your next session, delivering unintended energy to the brow area and increasing the risk of further follicle stress or hair loss.

After treatment, the skin barrier is compromised and the follicles are in a fragile, recovering state. Henna in particular contains chemicals that can cause irritation or sensitisation in compromised skin. Any inflammation triggered around the follicle at this stage could disrupt or delay the regrowth process.

For these reasons, we strongly recommend avoiding all henna, tinting, and lamination products between sessions, not just before them.

Please be reassured temporary hair loss is a known and expected response, and the vast majority of clients experience full, natural regrowth.

Re-Tattooing

If your goal is a fresh cosmetic tattoo, it is generally recommended to wait a minimum of 6–8 weeks after your final laser session before getting new pigment applied.

Realistic Expectations

Cosmetic tattoo removal is a gradual process requiring patience and multiple treatments. Early sessions often produce the greatest visible improvement, while later sessions focus on clearing deeper or more resistant pigment.

Temporary colour changes, uneven fading, and slower progress in later stages are all normal parts of treatment.

Following your clinician’s advice and adhering to aftercare instructions will help maximise results and minimise the risk of complications.

Booking Your Next Session

Your next appointment is usually recommended 6 weeks after treatment, unless otherwise advised by your clinician.
