Is Melbourne Winter Drying Your Skin? Here’s What We’re Reaching For.

It’s that time of year again. The reverse-cycle heating is cranked, the wind at the tram stop could strip paint, and your skin has entered its annual identity crisis and gone tight and flaky in some patches, weirdly shiny in others, and somehow dull absolutely everywhere. Sound familiar? Every winter, without fail, there’s one product our clinic reaches for on repeat: LA LEI’s Royal Oil C. Here’s why it’s earned a permanent spot on our counter, and why yours might be worth a spot too.

Okay, But Why Does Winter Skin Feel Like This?

Short version: your skin is losing water faster than it can replace it. Cold air outside, dry heating inside, and one too many scalding-hot showers (no judgment) all add up to what dermatologists call transepidermal water loss, and what the rest of us call “why does my face feel like a chip packet by 3pm.” The result is a barrier working overtime and getting nowhere fast, which is exactly the situation the right oil is built to fix.

Enter Royal Oil C

Royal Oil C is a featherweight face oil that somehow manages to feel indulgent without ever feeling heavy, and if you’ve been burned by a “nourishing” oil that left you looking glazed by lunchtime, that’s kind of the whole point.

Think of it less as a moisturising extra and more as a treatment oil doing several jobs from one bottle. Vitamin C is pulling double duty here: it’s a hydrating antioxidant that helps skin hold onto moisture, and it’s also one of the most reliable ingredients around for fading dullness and brightening an uneven complexion. Kojic acid is the pigmentation specialist in the formula, and it targets the darker patches, sun spots, and uneven tone that always seem to show up more under flat winter light. Layer in coenzyme Q10, argan, prickly pear, açai berry, and frankincense oils, and you’ve essentially got hydration, brightening, and pigmentation-fighting all working at once, from one product. Dull, dehydrated, uneven winter skin is more or less the exact brief this was written for.

How We Actually Use It (Because More Isn’t Better)

One to two drops. That’s it. Pat or dab it into freshly cleansed skin, and there’s no rubbing or dragging needed. Most people get the best results treating it as a night treatment oil, letting it do its work while you sleep. But if your skin runs properly dry, or you’re after that lit-from-within glow, it’s just as happy doing double duty in the morning too, so just make sure SPF goes on top. Always. Even in July. Even when it’s grey out and you’re 90% sure the sun’s given up entirely. It layers well under moisturiser, or works on its own on lower-maintenance nights, and by morning it sits under makeup without pilling, which frankly shouldn’t be possible for an oil this rich, but here we are.

“But I Have Oily Skin, Won’t This Make It Worse?”

Wrong tree. Oily and dehydrated aren’t opposites, and winter is exactly when skin that’s usually shiny can start overproducing oil to compensate for what it’s losing to the heating and the wind. Royal Oil C is formulated to suit oily, combination, and acne-prone skin as well as dry. It’s not about adding grease. It’s about giving the barrier what it actually needs so it stops overcompensating in the first place.

The Takeaway

  • One product, two jobs: brightening and barrier support
  • 1 to 2 drops, AM or PM, and always with SPF if it’s a daytime application
  • Suits pretty much every skin type, including oily and acne-prone
  • Works even harder for skin that’s recovering from a treatment with us (think chemical peels or laser) and needs extra support
